After two demos and an EP German Vargnatt return with the anticipated follow up 'Grausammler'. The first full length manifests a new level in the history of the band. Even though the songs are rather puristic the music reveals its depth - dreamscapes woven in desolation, sorrow and hope.
Greatly influenced by the early Burzum Era as well as Ulver's Nattens Madrigal „Grausammler“ draws the listener into a stream of memorable lead guitars surrounded by harsh vocals. A warm bass-guitar crafts the songs and the drumming by Wiedergaenger (Total Negation, Nachts, ex-Auvandril) rounds it off. Fragile string and choir performances done by "H.es.a.e. (Nachtreich, Ex-Eudaimony) enclose the sum.
8/10 Ave Noctum (UK)
"...this album is another great addition to the number of black metal albums which are supplemented by wistful melancholia rather than attacking with a constant acerbic frostiness."
"In a word, Grausammler is a marvel. It’s rooted in the black metal of decades past, but repeatedly transcends the confines of the genre. The music also has staying power — it will not wear out its welcome.”
MEAT MEAD METAL (US)
“Vargnatt infuse great emotion, abject heaviness into awesome debut offering ‘Grausammler’ ”
8/10 The Metal Observer
"Very good debut, and certainly recommended."
4,5/6 Postchrist (FR)
"Un album simple, mélodique et très efficace : ça fait plaisir !"
8/10 Rotting Hill (Ger)
"... to make an addicting album as long as you leave a personal touch in the song writing and concept. This is where VARGNATT succeeded and so I am pleased with this album, it works in the context of the discography perfectly coherent and includes almost everything you could want as a genre fan. "
16/20 Aux Port Du Metal (Fr)
"Vargnatt arrive with their first touching work. For lovers of depressive Black Metal, but also for extreme adventurers since Evae leaves enough room for the listener, enthralling, inviting, to travel through his brother Grausammler.
- Belgian Metal Community (Be)
"Between all the drabness and sorrow and destruction that this album mainly conveys, there is nevertheless still to be seen a glimmer of hope, no matter what directly causes this, the album stands out from many genre contemporaries."
8/10 Occult Black Metal Zine (Int)
"Vargnatt plays a style of black metal that mixes the atmospheric styles of 90's Norwegian and modern cascadian black metal together along with a great amount of raw energy and melody as well as a great touch of folk music to create a sound of their own"
"Grausammler" ist ein optimaler Soundtrack für düstere Herbsttage. Perfekt geeignet für einsame Wanderschaften durch neblige Felder oder Momente für einen ganz allein und genau dort liegt die Stärke VARGNATTs. Schön, dass auf gewisse Dinge Verlass ist."
